Favorite drum riff/passage of all time??

This is a hard one!!

Mine would have to be Tjoldalv's rhythm from 3:42 - 4:28 of Dimmu Borgir's "Mourning Palace" (Enthrone Darkness Triumphant). This is one of my favorite black metal passages of all time, anyway, but the drums in particular are what gets me. They're just so fluid..... SOOOOOOOOOO powerful.

Tjoldalv is one of my favorite drummers on the face of the Earth (would make my all-time Top 5 list, for sure).

A VERY closer runner-up would have to be Children of Bodom's Jaska Raatikainen during the first verse of "Downfall" (album - Hatebreeder, 0:52 - 1:12). I love the sound of the double-kick drum, and he uses it in this song better than anyone I've ever heard, despite being only 22 years old!

Easy for me...

Napalm Death - The Chains That Blind Us - drum interlude after the giutar solo...
Painkiller - Morning Of Balachaturdasi - drum intro...

Oh yeah, Mick Harris is my "only" influence in drumming, lol...

i was listening to Vital Remains the other day and was reminded of this thread...Forever Underground, something around 5:45min. mark is a kickass bit of drumming excellence...nothing too complicated, but it just sounds soo awesome, perfectly fitting in w/the song

I'd say tracks #3 and #4 off Immolation's Failures for Gods.

I love the sound he gets out of his double-bass drums.

Actually.....just about that whole cd is awesome for drumming.

I still say the first part of Raining Blood just gets me off ever time I hear it plus the drum solo in that song "Snot" by Snot. I like the sound he gets out of his Snare. Its got a real bright sound.

Mine would have to be either the intro to 13 Steps to Nowhere by Pantera, or the beginning drum riff with the tremolo guitars in Morbid Angel's Dawn of the Angry.

DC, I did know about the Mortician thingy...

That's why I checked them out, because they did cover Napalm Death. Too bad they're too shitty to write any good songs. And they use fuckin' drum-machines.

And if someone wants to be a grinder here, starts to listen to Mortician, because it's entitled as a 'grind' band by metalhammer, and the only grind shirt what 'headbanger' has is the newest Mortician.

Perhaps ill natured spiritual invasion by Old Man's Child was so awesome because it was Gene Hoglan on drums? You know, the guy from death, Dark Angel, Strapping Young Lad and Testament. But tjoldalv is a good drummer too.

I'd have to say that this song is one of my favourites. However, my favourite passage comes after the long-high pitched scream at about 4:10 until 4:25
(followed by one friggin mad riff)

It's called a drum machine, man. Trent Reznor only uses actual musicians live. Everything else is electronic, for the most part.

Well from your post I can tell you listen to Black MEtal. Dimmu Borgir's Nick Barker is far superior than Tjodval or however you spell it. But my favorite drummer's passage would be the whole album of Rust In Peace by Nick Menza from MegadetH. I love both Nick's both are extremely talented in their own genres.

i really like sinister drums. I've been told that the drummer is nothing special but i like it when the drumms get really brutal with lots of blast beats after a cool rhythm.

I have the cross the styx/diabolical summoning album

also, metallicas "one" breakdown rules. Also, the breakdown in lamb of gods "now you've got something to die for", and pretty much the whole song "the faded line", badass shit!!

I'm appreciate complex drums. However, I always fall back on the blast beat...nothing kicks my ass like a good blasting. I pick Pure Holocaust by Immortal, followed by buried by time and dust by Mayhem(the percussive blasting.) Sons of Northern Darkness has a nice intro as well. Fuck, I can't decide. Gene Hoglan did some great things for Death.

On record, likely something off of Meshuggah's first album, like the drums during the intro' to Erroneous Manipulation, when Haake keeps displacing snare hits off the beat, or during the outro' of Abnegating Cecity.

Live though was when Cynic played at that festival in Norway and Sean pulled out the intro' to Sentiment. According to Paul's tour blog, and as far as I can remember, it was to do with his guitar MIDI rig not being plugged into the right socket. An out instead of an in. It didn't play, so Sean took over.

I like the drums at the beginning of "Slaves Shall Serve" by Behemoth. I know its nothing too complicated but it fits well.

Overactive Imagination by Death.

The verse part, the breakdown, the fills.. it's immaculate from one end to the other.

I know all of Death and/or Hoglan's stuff is, but this song shows it off best I reckon.

Nope.

He used - and as far as I know still does use - some early 80s Camco pedals.

Oh I see, Camco pedals are now rarely used nowadays.

Yeah, but they're apparently mega-smooth. I almost bought one on eBay a few weeks ago, but some bastard outbid me at the last second.

Dunno, dude - you'd have to ask someone who's played both.

I had longboards for a while, but didn't get on with them. Never tried Camco.

Thats a damn hard question. Ide have to say either Mashkith by Kronos, or Behold Judas by Hate Eternal.
