Krallice

http://www.myspace.com/krallice

New Black metal band from Colin Marston (Behold...the Arctopus) and Mick Barr (Orthrelm, Octis).

Really, really fucking good and I'm suprised because I thought it was going to be a really artsy project when I heard about who was in it. I'm damn impressed. It's not raw but it's pretty much perfect mid-(sometimes high) tempo Black Metal.

Some of you may enjoy it.

The sample song is by no means the best on the actual album, by the way.

I have to agree...I was kinda surprised to find it as good as it is considering their other work. But then again, there are a lot of talented BM musicians that play other genres very well on the side also.

Yeah, I got their album about two weeks ago. Some of the polyphony and counterpoint on show is stunning. The vocals are a bit hardcore-ish at times but I wouldn't let that put anybody off from what is one of the best albums - along with Ansur's Warring Factions - that I've heard in a long time.

I can't say the track up on their myspace interested me very much, but I'll check out the album since Sir Mansley holds it in such high regards.

Ah, thank you for bumping - I've been meaning to check this out again but forgot. Perfect timing as I'm in a BM phase right now (Black Metal, too!)

Richy, you said you know one of these guys, right?

Its not bad but I can't really get into it for some reason. Like Jon said, the constant polyphony is impressive and their ability to interlace so many riffs is awesome but.. I just can't get my head into it.

Yeah, that's always plus. I was so excited to hear he joined Gorguts. Fucking perfect match.

Listening more (I should note that I've only listened to the three songs they have available on the myspace), I think that I'm turned off by the Baroque-esque writing it has and that's always been a 'style' I've never enjoyed. Excessive writing and complexity, even though it isn't wankery, quickly looses my interested especially when a lot of the riffs slip by unnoticed. It's still semi-good and interesting though and my favorite song of the three is Energy Chasm - I think it's got the best atmosphere which is something I look for in BM. Maybe I'll pick the album up just to give it a real chance as I feel like I could start liking this. I'm just really picky with my Black Metal I guess.

Your album of the day is right up my alley, however!

Well I still think you should download the entire album just to give it a go. The only song on their MySpace off of Dimensional Bleedthrough is the title-track, and there's some more nice and better shit on the album.

What exactly is "hipster" about it?

My two favourite songs of theirs are "Energy Chasms" and "Intraum". Both have an amazing outro section that the rest of the song builds up to so perfectly.

I've not listened to anything but Anthems... for the past 10 days. To say it's a perfect record doesn't do it justice.

I don't hear anything remotely "hipster" in this band's music. In fact, I'd venture to say they kick out better quality and atmosphere than anything Norway has belched out in the last 5 years.

They're presumably hipster because they're young dudes from the hipster epicenter in Brooklyn. I know that in some of the 'true'-er movements in Europe (I know this for a fact in Poland), which are, to say the least, fairly removed from hipsterdom, these guys are the only American band considered to be worth a damn. Though I guess Dame Fra Morkum is the authority.

I've met Colin Marston a time or two, but the rhythm section of Krallice is made up of two friends of mine from college (which is how I've met Marston), and those are the guys I'd claim to 'know.' Mostly because I've known them for years and this is the latest in a succession of bands of theirs I've listened to. It just also happens to be a million times bigger than the other ones.

But seriously, I'd expect to hear the charge of 'hipster' leveled against them more than once, being as they are young, artsy dudes from Williamsburg and Bushwick.

I don't like too much modern black metal to be honest. Besides maybe Weakling and Lifelover, both of which I would still consider hipster black metal bands. I haven't even bothered to listen to Krallice, they play here often and I just have no interest. I am expecting them to sound like Shining. Either way they're still hipster black metal.

Given that 'hipster black metal' seems to be 'American black metal,' that's not a very descriptive label.

But it's a particular, ornate style of BM that may or may not do anything for you. My interest in black metal is fairly limited, but they're one of the bands that hits the right notes, for my ear.

I still don't get what aspect of them makes them the least bit "hipster". And they sound nothing like Shining.

Still working on getting the album.

I disagree, but Finland (Vordr, CoO) and France/French Speaking (Peste Noire, Akitsa) are pumping out the best black metal nowadays.

I mean, you can't forget we have Bone Awl, Grinning Death's Head and now Endless Humiliation (playing with them in Philly!!!). Speaking of which I'm making a new thread about this now.

I popped in Ulver's Nattens Madrigal (easily in my top 3 black metal albums) after a good year of having not listened to it and I was stunned at the realization that I never recognized the similarity there is between the two. I was then less stunned to see Colin specifically say that Krallice is a kind of "throwback" to some of the older BM bands, like Ulver.

John, if you don't have that album, fucking get it! Krallice is cool, but its got nothing on that masterpiece.

Napster has it so I'm going to finish listening to Anata's Under a Stone With No Inscription then give it a spin.

I've got Krallice's new record Diotima on pre-order. I don't get that excited about new music these days but Krallice and Nile always whet my appetite.

Krallice never fail to deliver! The album takes multiple spins before the listener can truly appreciate what's going on but once everything clicks into place you're left with an awesome record once again.

Listening to the new Krallice now. Very Krallicey and fantastical. Their composition style is just awesome. When I first started listening to them I couldn't really get into that Baroque sound they sometimes dance around but I love it now. There seems to be a bit less of it on Diotima, but I've only given it a listen through once. The last track, Dust and Light, is fucking great.

"Dust and Light" is right up there with "Energy Chasms" and "Intraum" in competing for my favourite track of theirs. And what a great track with which to end the album; that outro is just phenomenal.

I still haven't heard their first album. I've heard a few when I first started to get into them and I remember digging it, so I'll have to swing back to that one once I get my fill from the latest.
