Drum Mics

Can someone shine some light on brands of drum mics they use? Are they dynamic mics for kick, snare, and toms? What about for cymbals? I've been doing some research and see cardioid condenser mics seem to be the most popular. What brand of condenser mics does everyone use for cymbals? Any other information you wish to share about miking drums, brands of mics, and getting a good sound...please share in this thread. Thanks!

My advice is to pay really close attention to the snare and hi-hat mics, you want to angle them so that there is no bleed at all, you dont want to hear the hats on your snare track

you should look for books on recording, apparently there is a whole science to how you set mics up,the distance between each mic and so forth. i know very little about it. but ive noticed a mic under the snare and a seperate one for hihat set up on the other side as far from the snare mic as possible helps. and pay close attention to your overheads that they arent close together. its hard to islolate what each one is recieving and i wish i could be more helpful.

there is a russian brand of condenser mic, my roomate had one. companys name is octavian or octavius. the quality control really sucks tho. but people have been known to buy them by the caseload because out of many ok standard mics there will be a few really amazing ones for the money you pay for it.

ill ask my bandmate about it tommorrow and fill you in more

Cool. I've been looking into it alot. There's cardioid, and there's bi-directional, and omni-directional. I'm really just learning the differences now. What are some good brands of:

a. Drum mics (snare, kick, toms)
b. Condenser mics for overhead

Thanks for the replies guys. I figure this thread will serve a good purpose as well as helping me firsthand.
