Yeh, i just listened to a Flea bass solo, damn palm slapping was insane. So as much as i dislike funk rock, Flea goes into my list.

Meh, he's better than you and he writes songs and does vox.

hah, i think this is the first time im in the bass forum. I just came to to say that Martin Henriksson is my favorite bassist. Does anyone ever listen to Dark Tranquillity's Skydancer? I have never in my life heard bass playing that appealed to me more than the bass on that particular album. Not only the way he plays, but the sound of his bass is fucking nice on here.

Yeah ryknow is really good, and a warwick thumb user! hoorah!!!

he taps slaps and does a lot of fast fingerstyle bass lines.. very under rated bassist.

The guy from Dream Theater. I don't really like them much, but if you get one of the songs with his bass solos (specifically 'Metropolis Pt. 1' and 'The Dance of Eternity'), you're likely to hear some of the most impressive bass tapping you'll ever hear. He looks like an octopus when he plays, which is funny.

Listen to some Cannibal Corpse. You may not completely get the feel of how good he is but on the 'Making of The Wretched Spawn' dvd, they show just him playing, and its pretty amazing.

Jack bruce from Cream was a pretty good bass player, not a amazing one, but he had the grooves, and a warwick thumb fretless player

You're all missing the top of the top here...

Chris Squire of Yes. Listen to "Gates of Delirium". I can guarentee you'll never find a more well-written bassline in your life. Complete genius.

Abbath was one of my favourite bassists because he's just such a funny cunt. Another great one is Steve Cloutier (rip), formerly part of the mighty Gorguts.

favs

I always have a tough time with this. All these guys are talented, but I love how bass sounds with the rest of the band. Guys like...
Marco Hietala - Nightwish
Henkka Blacksmith - Bodom
...are my favs. I don't think Basses are really supposed to be the focus of bands. Unless you're nuts like Les Claypool. Best vocals ever.

I've never heard the Nightwish bass player play anything good. Hell I've hardly heard him play anything (he's usually drowned out). Though they're a great band that I really like, I feel pity for the bass player, I mean come on! They expect him to stay awake while playing live? Just listen to his basslines!

Seriously though give some examples of what songs you're talking about because I've never heard anything noticeable from him. All I know is he seems to have a thrashy sound on his bass. Maybe he uses a bit of overdrive?

Also you're going to get smoked for the last part of your post, methinks.
Edit: fixed typo

Hes using slap for the first like 15-20 seconds, and then hes using a technique that he invented called the open-hammer-pluck, he shows how to do it on his website, with video's of him playing the song.. its insane, he does 32nd notes..

okay hes extremely fast, and I love his playing...but I only hear the bass in corpse songs, because it makes "clackclack". and hammer smashed face is very inprecise I think.
Its not because he cant play without those "clacks" ?

This "clacks" are depending on the tuning you are using on your amp !
